Hello all,
I'm not sure if this is the most appropriate place to post this topic, so apologies if it's incorrect.
I was wondering if I would be suitable for the sport of football, and if so, which position?
I am a recent immigrant to your shores, as I married a wonderful Texan who didn't want to move. As such, I have never played a stitch of football in my entire life. That being said, I do have some pluses.
I am South African born and raised, and therefore, have played rugby for a large portion of my life. Along with rugby, I have played field hockey (as a goalkeeper), cricket, and basketball (played for my province).
Many of the skills in these sports are transferable, I assume, in some way to football with Rugby being the obvious best of the lot.
I am 6'0" and about 340lb (working on this). I can run, and hit, very hard. Haven't tested my 40 time or jump height or anything like that. As a goalkeeper, I have been taught to move quickly from side to side, stopping or even tackling other players.
I can tackle with my shoulder, taught from Rugby. Also from rugby, I know how to punt and dropkick, though that's not that important in football. I am very good at catching, one of my favorite personal skills.
I'm not scared of contact, and even had the nickname "Tank" when playing for my high school rugby team.
The only real drawbacks are that I'm not a very fast runner (big but slow), and I have absolutely no experience in football. Rugby is a poor substitute for the tactics used in football. I am a quick study and love watching football. I have learned the majority of the rules, and play Madden all the time. So there is *some* knowledge. Obviously, not equal to a HS player.
I am interested in Fullback, Tight End, and Offensive Lineman. I'd love to play Linebacker but I'm far too slow/heavy at the moment. Perhaps in future.
So, suggestions or ideas? I'm interested in starting to play once I move out to California, hopefully sometime at the start of next year. I figured I'd ask about this now before starting to look.
