Second Chance Collegiate Football League Coach Charles Jones, Commissioner (803) 669-5900 Donald Thomson, Associate Commissioner (864) 923-1617
Email: secondchancefootball@yahoo.com
The Second Chance Collegiate Football League is for young men between the ages of 18-23 years who are excited about playing football and may not otherwise have the opportunity to do so. This league will be a state wide league that has already begun recruiting players in the upstate with the vision of recruiting players from the midlands as well as the south end of the state of South Carolina resulting in statewide 6-8 teams.
The idea for this league came out of the heart and mind of Coach Charles G. Jones. Jones is a native of Gray Court, South Carolina and has had over two decades of coaching experience both here in the South as well as in Canada. While in Canada and in planning his return to his home in SC, Coach Jones had the vision of beginning this state wide league originally known as the South Carolina Junior Football League. Since South Carolina does not have a junior college system hence it does not have a junior college football league, Coach Jones had the idea of beginning this league and coordinating the leagues efforts of training young men to play a sport that they love while furthering their abilities in higher education. The idea is to organize this state wide league at a technical school level and giving these young men the opportunity to later transfer both their academic as well as sport abilities to a 4 year school within South Carolina or elsewhere in the US. Upon his return to SC, Coach Jones spoke of his ideas while in the upstate and Bart Wright from the Greenville news began writing about the League's concept. A series of articles have appeared in the Greenville news paper upon which an inmate from a local prison here in South Carolina read the article and sent letter to Coach Jones stating that he would like a "second chance" at an opportunity to be involved in sport that he was once passionate about. But a life of poor choices which led him to prison caused him to loose his own chance to play as well as lose the opportunity to go to college. Coach Jones was moved by this letter and later was invited to this correctional facility to give a talk to the male inmates. Upon meeting the author of the letter in person coach Jones told this young man how moved he was by his letter and that he was going to change the name of the league to the "Second Chance Collegiate Football League".
To date, there have been three combines held in the upstate with and three in the Midlands. On Saturday the 28th of June the Second Chance Collegiate Football league and D1 Sports of Greenville will be forming a partnership. This partnership has been formed to assist these young athletes in all aspects of their training including comprehensive workout sessions and assisting these young men in getting to a higher level in their performance ability. The League has a non profit status 501 C (3), and is looking for potential players, cheerleaders, volunteer coaches, volunteer officials as well as community sponsors who might be interested in donating time, financial resources and possible grant opportunities. If you and your company can assist us please call us. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Coach Charles Jones, Commissioner (803) 669-5900 Donald Thomson, Associate Commissioner (864) 923-1617 Claire M. Mensack, PhD. Health Educator (803) 318-2158
