Des Moines, IA – The Iowa Lightning football club is preparing for their first tryout of the upcoming 2009 season. The event will be held January 17th at Champs Sports, 4600 Park Avenue in Des Moines.
Iowa is coming off a very successful 9-2 inaugural campaign in which they won the NAFL’s Grain Belt Division and advanced to the second round of the national playoffs. The ’08 Lightning roster contained athletes of varied experience levels, from high school to professional. Three players, Brent Tisl (K), Shane Spooner (FB), and Lester Allen (RB), participated in the NAFL All-Star game in Atlanta, GA in November, with Allen taking home the offensive MVP award for the North squad.
As the team looks forward to improving on a solid first season, Head Coach Tyrone Tyler knows what is needed to take the next step, “We need to have a productive off season and recruit to gain some depth. I also want to create some competition this coming year so we put the best 11 on the field.”
The first year success has really paid off for the Lightning, and could potentially snowball into bigger things over the coming year. More than 25 Athletes have already registered for the tryout at www.iowalightningfootball.net and the team has begun to draw the interest of A-list sponsors such as Fitness World and HY VEE.
The combine style forum will test athletes in the 40-yard dash, 10-yard shuttle, L speed drill, bench press, and position specific 1-on-1 drills. Athletes are responsible for gym shoes and workout attire and should be prepared for both the gym floor and artificial turf. The registration fee will be $25.
