Some NLFL Clubs Offer to Share
Some Net Profits with Players and Coaches
“We want to be a true semi-professional football league,” said NLFL president Larry Names. “To do that, we have to share some net profits with our players and coaches something.”
Players will still pay a fee to be a part of the team just like in every other so-called semi-pro league. The difference will be some NLFL clubs will share net profits from game ticket sales with the players and coaches and players and coaches will be receive a portion of the gross proceeds of sales of any items that have their names or images on them.
“The 1919 Packers passed the hat and divided the take among the players,” said Names, an authority on the history of the Green Bay Packers and the National Football League. “I believe they made $17 apiece that year. We hope our players make a lot more than that.”
NLFL owners expect greater attendance than some of the other leagues in the Midwest because the rule changes they have made. The different rules put emphasis on offense and scoring. Changes include the 4-point field goal for attempts that begin outside the red zone; 6 points for returning a blocked PAT all the way; no fair catch; and allowing the man in motion to be moving forward prior to the snap.
“Our intent,” said Paul Names, co-owner of the Escanaba Bandits, “is to make our games more fun for the players to play and for the fans to watch.”
