The Chambersburg Cardinals rolled to their third straight victory Saturday night at Trojan Stadium to remain undefeated.
By overpowering the South Jersey Lynx 38-8 in a Gridiron Developmental Football League game, the Cardinals remain the leaders of their division, but Chambersburg head coach Chad Fauson saw plenty of room for improvement.
"I'm happy with the overall outcome but this was a sloppy win," Fauson said referring partly to his team's penalties (16 for 125 yards). "You can't get wrapped up in the talking and jarring. That's what teams do when they're losing and try to pull you into it. But you need to maintain your composure. We didn't do that tonight."
Ottis Lewis broke open the scoring in the first quarter when he pulled in an 18-yard pass from Anthony Gardner in the end zone, and Stephen Link contributed a 32-yard field goal to make the score 10-0 going into the second period.
An interception by Michael Bibbs was followed shortly after by another Lewis touchdown, when Garder's pass landed into Lewis' outstretched arms for the TD.
"I felt I missed some opportunities last week," Lewis said. "I thought I owed the fans a couple long bombs."
"Lewis is 6-6 and is a tough guy to cover," Fauson said. "He creates mismatches every week. What can I say? He's just a good football player."
Gardner used his legs later in the quarter with a 6-yard scoring run to increase his team's lead to 24-0 at halftime.
After a scoreless third period, Chambersburg's Garrien Johnson left defenders trailing behind him as he reeled in a 60-yard pass from Gardner to open the fourth quarter. The Cardinals' last score of the night came on a 10-yard pass from Gardner and a dive over the end zone line from Jones.
The Lynx managed one touchdown to close the game when Lejominick Washington connected with Edward Dover for a 20-yard score, but Fauson had praise for his defense.
"They were solid again even though we were thin across the board tonight and missed Louis Corum (who got signed by the Virginia Destroyers of the UFL). We have to keep plugging away in practice and on Saturday nights. We have to utilize all our talent and make sure everyone's on the same page."
"We still have a lot of things to work on," Lewis said. "It was an all-around good effort and we're getting better every week. We just have to continue to build our momentum."
