GREENCASTLE, Pa.—Six-year-old Calvin McLaughlin is recovering at home after a June 14 lawn-mower accident resulted in the loss of part of his left leg.
Calvin's mother, Serena Harne, said he is bouncing back from his ordeal and walking with crutches.
"He is doing really well and will start first grade (at Greencastle-Antrim Primary School) on time in August," Harne said.
So far, Calvin has undergone five operations at Hershey (Pa.) Medical Center, including the amputation of his left leg below his knee. A sixth surgery is scheduled for Aug. 3.
He could have additional operations every year depending on how fast he grows, Harne said.
The community has rallied around the family in the wake of the accident.
"The community has been wonderful," Harne said. "I'm not one to ever ask for help. But the support has been outstanding."
Now, the Chambersburg (Pa.) Cardinals of the Gridiron Developmental Football League and All-Shred Inc. of Frederick, Md., are teaming up to help Calvin and his family. Calvin's stepfather, Randy Harne, is an All-Shred employee.
All-Shred will have one of its mobile shredding trucks at the Cardinals' home games on July 23, Aug. 6 and Aug. 13. The Cardinals play at Trojan Stadium in Chambersburg.
From 4 to 6 p.m., fans can bring documents to be shredded. In lieu of the shredding fee, donations will be accepted for Calvin and his family.
"Calvin is home recovering now, but the family is facing a mountain of medical bills as additional surgeries are required," Mary Pat Kulina, owner of All-Shred Inc., wrote in a news release. "With limited medical coverage and extensive care needed, the bills are piling up quickly."
The Cardinals, who are 4-0, will host D.C. Explosion Saturday, the Bergen Hawks on Aug. 6 and the New Jersey Stags on Aug. 13. Games begin at 7 p.m., with gates opening at 5 p.m.
"The team has always had the strong sense of community — of giving back to the community," said Colleen Winters, regional marketing manager for the Cardinals. "When All-Shred reached out to us with the story, it just touched all of our hearts. It's a child, and we just thought if there's something we can do to help them through this, we'll do what we can."
For those who are unable to attend the games, donations can be made payable to Randy Harne and mailed to 359 E. Baltimore St., Greencastle, PA 17225.
