Lynx Take On Bergen Hawks

CAMDEN, New Jersey – The South Jersey Lynx (2-3) will face the Bergen (NJ) Hawks (0-3) for the first time. Both teams have started the 2011 season losing and trying to recover. South Jersey started the season a couple weeks before the Hawks and that would explain the difference in amount of games played. The teams have not dealt with the unsuccessful starts, just two years ago, both teams were atop their respective divisions and flourishing towards the playoffs. This 2011 season is a stark contrast to those days.


Bergen has yet to successfully break into the win column and will be pressed to change all the misfortune. The Lynx will have all intentions of defending their home turf as they look to salvage the season and make the playoffs.


Other games in the North Atlantic – North Division: Chambersburg Cardinals (4-0) host DC Explosion (3-2), Jersey Stags & Lancaster Lightning have a bye.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN- The GDFL cross town rivals Indianapolis Tornados will host the Naptown Scorpions in a showdown whose importance extends far beyond the gridiron. On Saturday, July 23, 2011, the 5-0 Tornados and 4-1 Scorpions will compete for home field advantage within the Hoosier Division of the GDFL. This matchup will be the first truly competitive game for either team, as both teams have been in lopsided contests up to this point. The game will begin at 7:00 at Park Tudor High School in Indianapolis, with pre-game events beginning at 6:15. Listen to the game on HCSNRadio.com. Pregame show begins at 6:45 pm with kickoff at 7:00 pm. Keith Meyers and Bill Ludlow will be calling all the action.

This game will occur in conjunction with the Tornados’ “Never Give Up Night” to recognize those who have survived or are continuing to fight cancer. Erin Walters, who is currently battling cancer, will be singing the national anthem before the game. Also featured will be a silent auction with great prizes, opportunities to purchase balloons to raise funds for charity, other events that will benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, free parking, concessions, etc.

The Indianapolis Tornados are a minor league football team with a rich history and an intense commitment to the community. The Tornados offer graduates from various high schools and colleges an opportunity to prepare themselves for professional aspirations. ATLANTA, GA - Another stellar match up between the No. 10 Beaufort Hornets and No. 20 Palmetto Havoc is the Week 8 Game of the Week as chosen by you the fans via the GDFL poll this week. The visiting Hornets will take their 6-0 record into Doug Shaw Stadium in Myrtle Beach,SC and face their Midway South division opponent in the Havoc, a squad that is hungry for a win over the boys from Beaufort. The Hornets won their first meeting earlier this season 15-12, the only loss for the Havoc this season. Mike Johnson will lead the Hornets from the quarterback position and has the athletes around him to make a difference in all purpose player Tymaine Fields. Devin Raymond and Willie Turral will lead the attack on the ground. Willie Turral was the hero last week scoring a touchdown in overtime to lead the Hornets past the South Carolina Commanders 18-12. It was the Hornet defense that kept the Hornets in the game stopping the Commanders several times in the red zone in key spots.

For the Havoc they just want to win no matter what. In the storied history of these two teams going back to when the Hornets were the Broncos and the Havoc were the Carolina Predators the Havoc franchise has never defeated the boys from Beaufort. Strong safety Jason Booker, linebacker Ira Hemingway, running back Anthnoy Green, wide receiver Jarrod Morris, quarterback Josh Thomson and defensive linemen Robbie Berkley all have major impact in wreaking havoc for the Havoc.

As we travel up the eastern seaboard we turn our attention to the Cougars and the Hurricanes. Yes the No.5 Virginia Cougars and the No.15 Hampton Roads Hurricanes. Virginia Beach should be rocking from start to finish for round 2 of the North Atlantic South Division match up. Emotions have been building since the Cougars early season 17-3 win. The Hurricanes will be ready to rock the house in an effort to take the division lead.

Back in the deep south the heated rivalry between Atlanta Chiefs and the No. 21 Georgia Jets will resume. The teams will be meeting for only the second time and split the previous two meetings. So how can this me a "heated" rivalry you ask? Well the both franchises are competing not only on the field but in the front office. There have been players, coaches and other personnel that have left one and went and joined other and in some cases left to go back to where they started. Both teams are under new coaches but the ownership groups are the same and the competition runs that deep. The rosters have changed but many key players from both teams return. At the end of the day the Chiefs are seeking revenge from a 7-0 loss in the final seconds in the Southern Football League Championship game in 2010 where the Jets flew above the reservation and left as the champ. Now they meet with the Chiefs hungry to stay within striking distance of the Sunbelt division crown, a win would put them there, a loss would close the door almost completely. For the Jets they are reeling coming off a loss to the Henry Co. Horsemen and are seeking a rebound and a boost of morale especially since the announcements that suspensions will go down prior to the game on Saturday. The Jets and Chiefs bash can be heard live on Jet Media LLC and will be simulcast on Total Sports Coverage, the home of the GDFL Game Center Weekend Wrap Up Show heard live on Sundays nights.

In the Midwest the No. 2 Oklahoma Thunder (5-0) will tackle the undefeated Arkansas Sabres of the Alliance Football League. Oklahoma remains a solid threat to return to the GDFL Championship game and have a stranglehold on the Midwest North Division. The Thunder have only allowed 7 points all season which has raised questions about their strength of schedule. The Sabres on the flipside have only allowed 18 points in their games played through June 25th. In a phrase something must give. The Thunder/Sabres game can be heard live on Oklahoma Thunder Football on the Blog Talk Radio Network.


Back East the No.13 Chambersburg Cardinals (4-0) will host a DC Explosion (3-2) team who are fresh off a loss and out of the Top 25 again. The Explosion will look to keep their heads above water and remain in the playoff hunt. Chambersburg will be looking to continue on their winning ways after a 54-3 win over the Bergen Hawks last week.

FOOTBALL: D.C. feels sting of '09 loss to Cardinals

The last time the D.C. Explosion came to Chambersburg, there was trouble.

It was the first game of the 2009 North American Football League playoffs and Cardinals running back Andre McDonald cemented a 14-0 victory with a 40-yard touchdown run with 1:30 remaining in the game, pulling several D.C. defenders into the end zone with him.

The game was called moments later because of unsportsmanlike conduct by the D.C. players and the teams, both in their inaugural year in the Gridiron Developmental Football League, haven't met since.

Until tonight.

"I know there's still a little bad blood there," Cardinals coach Chad Fauson said. "This game is sort of like a rivalry game for us. Some guys from both teams have played together with the Frederick Outlaws in the spring, so they know each other. There's been some friendly banter going on."

The Explosion is not off to an auspicious start. It is 3-2 and has been outscored 169-129 so far. D.C. lost by 39 points last week to the New Jersey Stags -- a team Chambersburg roughed up with a 41-0 victory in the season opener.

"I know the Explosion has a lot of athletes," Fauson said. "I've watched their spring team, the DMV Knights, and they won their league. They have talent, no doubt about it. They're probably the most talented team we've see up to this point.

"I know if they lose another game in the division their chance to make the playoffs will be very slim. So this is their season in a nutshell."


Cardinals, who beat the Bergen Hawks 54-3 last Saturday, will have a few reinforcements at their disposal tonight. Newly-signed defensive backs Jermaine Thaxton and Donald DeFrand will see the field and bolster the Chambersburg secondary.

Fauson said Thaxton, a West Virginia University product, excelled in limited time against Bergen. DeFrand, of the University of Nebraska, will make his Cardinals debut.

Linebacker Louis Corum is back with the team after signing with the Virginia Destroyers of the United Football League last week. Corum returned when the UFL announced it was pushing its season back to mid-September. He is still expected to play for the Destroyers.

Corum's return will help a defensive unit that's been a little banged up the past two weeks.

"We're looking pretty decent with the depth we've added," Fauson said. "Injury-wise, we're a little better. I think giving a couple guys the week off last week might have helped. We've still got a little injury bug, but we're trying to hammer through, get healthy and get geared up."

NOTES: Quarterback Anthony Gardner has completed 36 of 57 passes for 743 yards and 10 touchdowns ... Running back Keon Lattimore leads all rushers with 226 yards on 28 carries and six touchdowns (one touchdown reception) ... Wide receiver Ottis Lewis leads the team with 10 receptions for 229 yards and four touchdowns.
