ATLANTA, GA - Gridiron Developmental Football League President Charles Thompson announced Wednesday night on a special edition of the GDFL Game Center, which is heard exclusively on Total Sports Coverage, that the GDFL Championship game and weekend has been moved to Atlanta, GA and will be held September 30-October 2nd. The Championship game and weekend had previously been scheduled to be held September 23rd-25th in Asheville, NC.
"We felt like [The GDFL Championship game] had a huge demand in where were going,... and to us it just seemed like the right fit", president Thompson said in his announcement. Thompson added that "[Atlanta] is a central location, we feel like it is easy to get to and there is a lot of activity there ,with tons of things that our members when they arrive can go and do and enjoy the city, hey it's a great place for people to just go an visit".
Thompson also thanked the people of Asheville, NC (home of the No.12 Asheville Grizzlies) for the opportunity to have the game played there however noted that it was a "mutual decision" that opened the door for another city to host the GDFL Championship weekend but did not elaborate with details.
In addition the GDFL All Star Game and Blue Ridge Mountain Bowl, which are a part of the GDFL Championship weekend events, will be held in Atlanta as well.
Atlanta, a transient city, is located 200 miles south of Asheville and is known for it's ability to host national events of all levels while providing quality entertainment to a diverse crowd that may be in town for a particular event. The No.4 Henry County Horsemen, No.12 Georgia Jets, Atlanta Lions and Atlanta Chiefs all play within the metro Atlanta area with the No.6 South Georgia 'Noles, Georgia Crush, and Peach State Rattlers located in the state of Georgia all within a 200 mile radius of Atlanta. Currently only the Horsemen, 'Noles and Jets have clinched playoffs spots with the Chiefs still mathematically alive. The Chiefs and Peach State Rattlers could earn berths in the Blue Ridge Mountain Bowl.
The move of the GDFL Championship weekend will not effect the structure of the GDFL Playoffs with the exception of adding a bye week between the conference (Xtreme and Impact) championship games and GDFL Championship game. More details on the GDFL Championship weekend in Atlanta,GA will be forthcoming as they are provided and a Championship Game page will be on the official website of the GDFL at www.gdfl.net.
