Chambersburg Cardinals roll to 39-0 playoff win over Hampton Roads Public Opinion Online
By CHRISTINA METHNER
For Public Opinion
The best offense is a good defense, it is often said.
For the Chambersburg Cardinals, those words couldn't have been more true Saturday night at Trojan Stadium.
The Cardinals defeated the Hampton Roads Hurricanes 39-0 in a Gridiron Developmental Football League second-round playoff game to continue their quest for back-to-back championships.
"Our offense wasn't in rhythm tonight and at times this one was sloppy," Chambersburg coach Chad Fauson said. "But thank God for our defense. They definitely put us in a good position to win."
The Cardinals will host a third-round game Saturday, playing the winner of the game between the Asheville (N.C.) Grizzlies and the Fayetteville (N.C.) Horizon. The site and time has not been determined because Trojan Stadium is hosting a Trojan soccer game that night.
The opening score came early in the first quarter. As the Hurricanes were set up in punt formation deep in their own territory, the snap sailed out the back of the end zone for a safety.
Later in the quarter, Cardinal quarterback Anthony Gardner found Keon Lattimore in the corner of the end zone for an 18-yard touchdown pass, and Chambersburg's Nick Watkins added to the lead shortly after by jumping in front of a Hampton Roads' pass and returning the interception 30 yards for the score.
The Cardinal defense snagged another interception with two minutes remaining in the half, when Markkus Davis secured Advertisement the pick and ran 17 yards before being taken down. The play set up Chambersburg on the Hurricanes' 23-yard line. Jerell Jones later converted the turnover into points by bullying his way into the end zone from one yard out.
The Cardinals took a 22-0 lead, and the Chambersburg defense held Hampton Roads to a total of eight yards on offense through halftime.
"I tell the defense every week that if they hold the opponent to no points, it's impossible for us to lose," Jones said. "I'm appreciative of the other guys on this team and all the hard work they put in."
The scoreboard was quiet in the third quarter, but Jones soon changed that.
Gardner spotted the receiver in the end zone, and Jones snagged the 14-yard pass despite a defender bearing down on him.
Jones scored again 70 seconds later when he caught a punt, broke outside and went 50 yards for the score.
"I was trying to cut crossfield like they teach us to do," Jones said. "I had great blocking from the guys and because of them I was able to make it into the end zone."
A 25-yard field goal by Stephen Link closed the scoring for the night as the Cardinals rolled to their second playoff victory.
Fauson said, "Our guys are getting used to having a cushion early, but we can't get soft or give the other team anything. We can't get comfortable and the guys have to keep themselves motivated.
"Jones had a monster game. He shows up to play week in and week out. We just need to get our offense clicking on all cylinders and if we can put up 10 points, I think we can win every game. That's how confident I am in our defense."
